Eleven sixth-formers from a Somerset boarding school run by Benedictine monks had to be suspended after a party got completely out of hand. Not only were school displays damaged and thrown in a skip, but the staff room carpet was smeared with dog mess.

To be fair, most people don’t behave in such a manner on their birthday and it’s perfectly possible to celebrate with a drink responsibly. Indeed, you can always mark the occasion with a ‘grown-up’ drink such as a vintage whisky.

American teenagers don’t make such as big fuss about turning 18: probably because they can’t legally drink until 21, meaning traditional 18th birthday gifts such as champagne are a no-no. Charlotte Callin, an up and coming new artist in the UK, who has has a lot of success with Topshop, a major iconic high street brand. She originally worked there as part of the visual merchandising team, working with the targeted branding, to maintain the stores image. While dressing manequins, she was noticed for her artistic flair by the regional manager, an accolade fairly rare in this industry.

She was asked to produce work for the regional newsletter to showcase her ability, and her designs went down a storm. From here, with her talents firmly cemented, Charlotte was asked to produce a design to be displayed on the fitting room wall.

The theme of the project was Hope and Glory, and was pointed to focus around the typical English look, contrasting bold union jack prints with delicate floral patterns and embellished lace, the trend was girly with a bold twist. Combining harem pants, blazers and top hats, it was to celebrate the English features, into our clothing. Charlotte felt that the design should be soft and curvy, with the idea or organic symbols featuring highly in her original thoughts. She submitted a piece that included British symbolism and artifacts, resembling a cameo or old fashioned paper design. it gave both masculine and feminine imagery, and culminated in a stunning piece of design and symbolism.

It was well recieved, but deemed to be too intricate for such a large scale. The client felt the design should be more simple for a punchier feel.

Charlotte went back to the drawing board, and produceda beautiful rose that incorporated the union jack design. It was chosen as the favourite piece, so she set to work with large sheets of black paper and her blade, for twenty four hours, to produce the paper cut. She was then commissioned to paint the piece onto the wall, where it stood for a full six months. Quite an accolade considering the fast pace of the fashion industry, and how fast the trends change with the seasons.

Charlotte is no longer with Topshop, having started her own business offering bespoke designs. She has done some travelling around Asia, with the styles she has seen now contributing to the beautiful style she offers in her pieces.
